Growing up in Southern Alberta, Day developed a passion for combat sports, leading him to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in which he quickly became a known force the NoGi tournament circuit. Looking to balance his ground expertise with standup combat, Day fell in love with boxing which helped propel him to the upper echelon of Canadian fighters. He began his professional MMA career in 2002, competing in regional circuits across Canada. Over nearly a decade, he amassed a professional record of 19 wins and 12 losses, with notable victories achieved through knockouts and submissions. Day's prowess earned him a spot in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), where he faced esteemed opponents, including Michael Bisping and Alan Belcher. His UFC debut was particularly memorable, securing an upset win over veteran Alan Belcher at UFC 83 the first ever UFC held on Canadian soil.
